Xuê Noon, a Maori astrobiologist, leads a mission to Mars in 2051 from the Aotearoa Space Agency. This follows the discovery of dormant microorganisms by NASA in 2039. As she tends to plants in a glasshouse on Mars, the narrative shifts to 2023, where Xuê, guided by the spirit of an ancient taniwha, returns to the Atacama Desert. The film addresses the struggles for land and water justice faced by Indigenous communities, contrasting the beauty of Mars with the ecological degradation in the Atacama.
