Are small modular reactors the future for nuclear?

Their compact size enables transportation to remote locations, making them suitable for energy-intensive industries like mining and desalination. Notable companies such as Rolls-Royce, Westinghouse, and GE Hitachi are developing SMR projects for commercial electricity generation. However, no land-based commercial SMR is yet connected to the utility grid, although a floating Russian SMR supplies electricity and heat in the Arctic. Despite the potential, challenges remain, including high costs and safety concerns regarding nuclear waste disposal. Nevertheless, the global demand for emission-free energy suggests that small modular reactors could play a crucial role in the future of energy production.
