Why are we all getting fat?
Synopsis
A five year old girl is taken into care due to obesity, highlighting a national health crisis.
Synopsis
In 2012, a five year old girl is taken into care due to her weight of 65 kilos, equivalent to that of an adult man. That same year, 4,000 children are taken into hospital for obesity treatment, a fourfold increase from a decade earlier. Currently, two-thirds of adults and a quarter of children are classified as overweight or obese. The rising obesity rates lead to serious health issues, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, with obesity causing over 17,000 cancers annually in the UK. The Health Service faces immense pressure as modern lifestyles contribute to this crisis, with people often snacking on unhealthy foods while multitasking. The food and drink industry promotes instant meals and sugary snacks, influencing children's eating habits from a young age. Despite attempts to lose weight, diets often fail due to the body's resistance to starvation. The need for education about real food and government intervention, such as marketing curbs and junk food taxes, is emphasized to combat this growing epidemic.
