420 million years ago, the forest floor of present-day New York was dominated by a primitive plant resembling a tree only in its wooden roots. Paleobotanists have shifted their focus from the evolution of trees above ground to the significant developments occurring below. This exploration highlights the critical role of early plant life in shaping Earth's ecosystems and the eventual rise of true trees.
