Myanmar is one of the world's last mobile phone frontiers, particularly in the countryside beyond Mandalay, where access to basic telecommunications is nearly nonexistent. Telenor of Norway and Oru have secured licenses to roll out mobile networks in a country with a mobile penetration rate below 10%. The signing of these licenses in January marks the beginning of a competitive race to sell SIM cards, which holds both political and commercial significance as Myanmar prepares for free elections next year.
