Seit über 50 Millionen Jahren ist Australien vom Festland isoliert. berschwemmungen und sengende Hitze haben den einzigartigen Kontinent geformt. Der Film begleitet den Botaniker Peter Latz in das trockene, rote Zentrum Australiens. Seiner Forschung nach hat Feuer aus einem trockenen Regenwald diese karge Landschaft geschaffen. Seit Jahren studiert er deshalb die Feuerempfindlichkeit von Sträuchern, Bäumen und anderen Pflanzen der West MacDonnell Ranges und zeigt ganz nebenbei, wie man in dieser scheinbar lebensfeindlichen Wüste reichlich Nahrung findet.
