Mars Express, the first planetary mission of the European Space Agency, reaches the Red Planet in 2003. Although the lander fails to fully deploy, the orbiter continues to capture images and map the Martian surface. It produces high-resolution mineralogical maps and radar soundings of permafrost while probing the atmosphere's composition. The released images reveal Mars' dramatic landscapes, shaped by ancient volcanic activity, showcasing features like Olympus Mons.
