Biomass Briquets from Cambodia

This factory in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, produces eco-friendly charcoal, known as green briquettes, from coconut shells. The initiative addresses Cambodia's significant deforestation issue, where 20% of woodlands have vanished in the last five years. Factory manager Carlo Talamanca highlights that the method, developed by the workers, innovatively transforms coconut shells into charcoal without cutting down trees. After two hours in the oven, 45 kilos of shells yield 10 kilos of charcoal, which is then pressed into briquettes. These briquettes burn longer than traditional charcoal and are gaining popularity among local restaurants and shops in Poonam Penh. Sales have surged from two tons per month to over eight tons, reflecting a growing acceptance of this sustainable alternative in a market traditionally reliant on wood and charcoal. The factory aims to double its current sales, contributing to environmental sustainability in Cambodia.
