Synopsis
Mariepaul Vermersch and her parents, Maurice and Rose, set up a booth at the 1964 World's Fair in Queens, New York, to sell a popular street food from Brussels. Initially wanting to call them Brussels Waffles, they changed the name to Bel-Gems after realizing many Americans were unfamiliar with the city. Their waffles, thick and fluffy with a crispy exterior, became a unique offering in the U.S. Today, Maurice's Belgian Waffles at the New York State Fair remains the only place serving this authentic treat.
