What It's Like To Take Care Of Multiple Family Members At Age 15
Synopsis
Jonathan, 15, juggles school and caregiving for his family affected by multiple sclerosis.
Synopsis
At 15, Jonathan takes on significant responsibilities caring for his family. His mother suffers from pre-dementia, while his younger brother Jacob, born with sagittal craniosynostosis, has undergone seven surgeries. Jonathan's life is further complicated by the effects of multiple sclerosis on his 40-year-old father, who struggles with speech and exhaustion. The family faces financial hardships, having been denied Medicaid and food stamps, forcing Jonathan's father to work two jobs. Jonathan wakes up at 5:30 AM to prepare for the day, balancing schoolwork with caregiving duties. He often finds it challenging to complete his homework, as teachers misunderstand his situation. The lack of support for youth caregivers is evident, with over 1.3 million children aged 8 to 18 in similar roles, yet few resources available for them. At school, Jonathan connects with peers who share similar experiences, finding solace in a community that understands the unique challenges of being a young caregiver.
