Undervaluing climate risk
Synopsis
Climate change risks threaten global agriculture and asset valuations, warns economist Hyman Minsky.
Synopsis
The world is reeling from record-breaking heat waves, wildfires, and rainfall, highlighting the vast costs of inaction on global warming. These costs are often not adequately reflected in asset valuations, leading to the risk of a climate Minsky moment, a term coined by economist Hyman Minsky, which describes a sudden correction in asset valuations. Agriculture is particularly vulnerable, with research from Morgan Stanley indicating that droughts and water scarcity could severely impact key crops like wheat and soybeans, potentially putting $314 billion of annual production in jeopardy. Additionally, about 20% of computer and electronics factories in Asia are located in flood-prone areas, raising concerns about manufacturers' exposure to climate hazards. A recent report suggests that the market is overvaluing U.S. residential properties exposed to flood risk by $121 to $237 billion. By 2050, climate change could displace up to 1.2 billion people, yet many financial models fail to incorporate climate change factors, which could lead to far worse economic outcomes than currently predicted.
