Joan Braderman arrived in New York City in 1971, eager to make her mark in the film industry. Instead, she found herself immersed in the vibrant arts culture of Lower Manhattan and the Heresies Collective, a group of feminist artists. The Heretics documents the collective's influential art journal, Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics, published from 1977 to 1992. Through interviews with former members, the film recounts their contributions to feminist art during the second wave of the women’s movement.
