Synopsis

Bote de Boer farms in Tjerkwerd, Southwest Friesland, where he eagerly anticipates the return of the black-tailed godwit. This meadow bird, a rare sight in the region, visits his land in large numbers. Despite the affection for the birds, Bote's farm struggles financially. The cow shed and tractor require urgent repairs, but the bank demands solid financial reports rather than an appreciation for wildlife. His wife, Astrid, voices the dilemma: “Everyone loves the birds on our land, but nobody wants to pay for them.”
