At Al Rata outside Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates leads in carbon capture and storage technology. The region, known for being one of the top five oil and gas producers, faces the challenge of involving oil and gas companies in environmental cleanup efforts. Instead of reducing fossil fuel production, Reliant Industries advocates for capturing emissions to combat global warming. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) collaborates with a Texas startup named 44.1 to explore innovative methods for carbon dioxide management. This partnership focuses on injecting dissolved carbon dioxide into nearby rocks, a novel approach in the UAE that aims to mineralize the gas. Although these projects are in early stages and experimental, ADNOC's expertise in subsurface technology and 44.1's unique methods could pave the way for significant advancements in carbon capture by 2030.
