Tompkins Square Park in New York's Lower East Side became a tent city in the summer of 1989, drawing attention to the growing homeless population. Nearby, a group of individuals operated a soup kitchen, collecting food from local restaurants and fish markets, as well as salvaging from dumpsters. They constructed makeshift cooking facilities using old sewer grates and built fires in the dirt. Filmmaker Lech Kowalski captures this gritty reality in black and white, documenting a community's struggle against the threat of closure from authorities.
