Fleeing from white people, they seek to preserve their identity amidst threats of disease, massacres, and forest destruction. Here, the act of painting one's skin red symbolizes a connection to their ancient civilization. The Wajãpis have a rich tradition of using vegetable dyes to create intricate body art, featuring compositions and symbols that reflect their cultural heritage, such as snakes.
