Synopsis

Putin has been living in an alternative reality regarding Ukraine, which reflects what is termed dictator syndrome. Whether it is Stalin or Hitler, strong-man leaders often ignore bad news. Ukrainian fighters have successfully defended their capital and forced a retreat of Russian forces in the north. Putin perceives criticism as a personal conspiracy against him and his power. The U.S. accuses Russia of using food as a weapon in its war against Ukraine, which Putin retaliates against by attempting to annihilate the country. Since becoming President of Russia in 2000, Putin's initial positive relations with Western leaders like Tony Blair and George Bush deteriorate after the war in Iraq. Despite his early promises of freedom and tolerance, Putin's actions reveal a desire for a controlling state, particularly over independent media, which he begins to suppress shortly after taking office.
