Derek Jarman's 1984 test shots for the Scottish band Orange Juice showcase a vibrant, handheld style that marks his shift from feature films to music videos.
Synopsis
Derek Jarman visited a location in 1984 to prepare for a music video for the Scottish post-punk band Orange Juice, led by Edwyn Collins. Using a newly acquired Olympus VHS camera, he recorded a series of test shots. The resulting 41-minute tape features warm colors and a handheld style that convey a directness rarely seen in music promos of the time. This early work reflects Jarman's transition from feature films to music videos during a challenging period in his career.
