Synopsis

On July 1, 1916, soldiers of the Newfoundland Regiment faced a devastating assault at Beaumont Hamel during the First World War. Of the 780 men who fought that day, only 110 survived. To mark the 100th anniversary of this battle, Brian McKenna's documentary features descendants of those soldiers. They reenact the experience in specially constructed trenches, connecting with their ancestors' history and the tragedy of that fateful day.
