Migrants at Tijuana border seek options outside the US
Synopsis
Yoni from Honduras seeks asylum in Mexico and receives job offers in Tijuana.
Synopsis
Yoni, a migrant from Honduras, recently sought asylum in Mexico and plans to pick up a certificate next Monday to confirm his application process. He finds the asylum process straightforward and learns that some individuals receive their IDs within five days, allowing them to work while their applications are reviewed. During his visit to the refugee office, Yoni receives two job offers: one in maintenance at Tijuana International Airport and another from a restaurant chain in Tijuana. Despite the opportunities, many migrants, including Besy, choose to remain in Mexico due to the dangers of crossing into the U.S. and the risks involved for their families. Only 7% of the caravan migrants have sought asylum in Mexico, while the majority still aim to enter the United States. Recently, 500 people have requested humanitarian visas, but the number remains low compared to the thousands of migrants present. The situation continues to evolve as some migrants opt for repatriation to their home countries.
