Neskaupstadur, a town of 1,500 people in eastern Iceland, was governed by socialists for 52 years. They gained power in 1946 during the Cold War. At the time, Iceland aligned with the West, becoming a NATO member. The United States operated a military base in the country. Throughout Iceland, centerright coalitions controlled the national government and other municipalities. Neskaupstadur stood out as an exception to this trend.
