Kisangani Diary

Synopsis

In March 1997, Hubert Sauper traveled along a railway line south of Kisangani, Zaire, where he encountered thousands of Hutu refugees. These individuals had fled Rwanda after the 1994 genocide, enduring years of famine and violence. As they emerged from the forest, they gathered in two large camps, hoping for repatriation. However, just weeks later, the camps were attacked by the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire, resulting in a massacre and further displacement of the refugees.
