In March 2008, post-election violence in Kenya resulted in over a thousand deaths and the displacement of hundreds of thousands. Government spokesman Alfred Mutua accused the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) of orchestrating ethnic cleansing, likening their actions to those of Slobodan Milosevic. Opposition leader Raila Odinga warned that continued reliance on hardliners by President Mwai Kibaki could lead to further instability.
