This area serves as a crucial staging and wintering site for migratory birds, supporting 98 percent of Pacific Brant and significant populations of Emperor Geese, Steller's Eider, and Taverner's Cackling Goose. Recognized as a Wetland of International Significance under the Ramsar Convention, Izembek is also designated as federally protected wilderness, highlighting its ecological importance.
