Greece to introduce high-tech border security system

Greece tests a high-tech border security system aimed at preventing illegal migration from Turkey. This system includes long-range thermal cameras, radar, and potentially swarms of drones. Located in the town of Porosh, the Greek border police patrol a 27-kilometer steel wall designed to deter refugees and migrants. The new surveillance technology will enable automatic detection of groups deep within Turkish territory, enhancing the capabilities of border guards. This initiative follows a border crisis in 2022 when Turkey sent thousands of migrants to the Greek border, exerting political pressure on the EU. The Greek government approved this integrated border security system, which will be operational next month. The EU has invested three billion euros into border security research since 2015, including the Thessaloniki-based Road Border Program, which has developed autonomous drone swarms for surveillance.
