These homespun vehicles, originally retooled from U.S. Army jeeps, showcase the unique creativity of Filipinos. Elmer, a 58-year-old jeepney driver, has been operating his vehicle between Manila's Santa Ana and Rizal Park for 12 years, carrying 60 passengers daily. However, his livelihood faces challenges as the government under Rodrigo Duterte plans to phase out older jeepneys to combat pollution and traffic congestion. Manila is notorious for its severe traffic, and the government aims to replace traditional diesel jeepneys with low-emission vehicles. Companies like Francisco Motors and Surround Motors are developing all-electric prototypes, but Elmer fears that losing the classic jeepney design would erase a vital piece of Philippine identity. The government intends to implement these changes by 2020, raising concerns among drivers about their future in the evolving transportation landscape.
