Synopsis

Hana Lyola Cotter recalls her teenage experience during the Hawke’s Bay earthquake, New Zealand’s deadliest civil disaster. On 3 February 1931, a 7.8 magnitude quake struck, resulting in over 250 fatalities. Director Gaylene Preston gathers firsthand accounts from survivors, including poet Lauris Edmond and a student from Greenmeadows Seminary. The documentary features newsreel footage that captures the extensive damage. Earthquake received a nomination for Best Popular Documentary at the 2006 Qantas TV Awards and won best sound at the NZ Screen Awards.
