Cursed Uranium

Synopsis

In the Niger desert, the Areva mine operates amidst some of the largest uranium reserves in the world. Every year, Niger produces over 2,500 tonnes of yellow cake, a uranium concentrate, which results in significant toxic waste. Close to the mine, the village of Arlit faces dire consequences, as radioactivity levels there exceed those found in the Chernobyl Prohibited Zone. Dust from the mine contaminates homes, posing serious health risks to residents and leading to the death of local wildlife. The uranium extracted is then shipped from Niger to the Orano processing facility, raising concerns about environmental and public health impacts.
