Synopsis

Jan Gerdes, a third-generation dairy farmer in rural Germany, confronts a difficult choice as his milk production declines. After suffering from burnout, he decides to leave the farming life behind. On the day his last cows are scheduled for transport to slaughter, twelve remain without a destination. Rather than send them to their deaths, Jan and his partner, Karin Mück, opt to keep the cows, founding Hof Butenland, Germany's first cow retirement home.
