Bell Pottinger banned from trade body
Synopsis
Bell Pottenger is expelled from the PRCA for unethical practices in South Africa.
Synopsis
The public relations and communications Association investigates Bell Pottenger starting in July after a complaint from South Africa's Democratic Alliance. The complaint alleges that Bell Pottenger exacerbates racial tensions in South Africa through its work for the Gupta family. The PRCA issues a report that expels Bell Pottenger for at least five years due to serious breaches of its professional and ethical code. The report describes their work as the worst seen in a decade, leading to the ultimate sanction of expulsion. Bell Pottenger was engaged by the Gupta family to promote their diverse business interests, which include media and mining, and they are closely linked to President Jacob Zuma. Despite denying the accusations, both the PRCA and an independent report find Bell Pottenger guilty of inflaming racial tensions. Co-founder Lord Tim Bell suggests this marks the end for the agency, as it faces potential loss of clients and staff, and struggles to find a buyer amidst its damaged reputation.
