In 2018, The New York Times published a devastating takedown of a small school in Louisiana, USA that became famous for its unbelievable track record placing kids at elite universities, seemingly against all odds. Its reporting revealed that the entire school was a hoax, with no classes, fake transcripts, and rampant abuse. As it wrote, the school “mined the worst stereotypes of black America to manufacture up-from-hardship tales that it sold to Ivy League schools hungry for diversity.” An investigative story exploring race, class and our collective eagerness to believe in a story that was too good to be true.
