Zero-G: extreme scientific fun

Synopsis

Nova Space conducts zero gravity flights from Bordeaux, France, using a converted Airbus A300 airliner to simulate weightlessness. These flights, organized for the European Space Agency, allow scientists to measure the effects of zero gravity and enhanced gravity on both people and materials. During the flight, the aircraft performs parabolic arcs, creating 20 seconds of free fall where Earth’s gravity is effectively canceled. Participants experience up to 31 of these weightless sensations in an average 2.5-hour flight. However, the extreme conditions can lead to physical effects, including nausea, prompting many to use anti-motion sickness drugs. A detailed medical examination is required for all participants to ensure they can handle the unique challenges of the flight, which includes experiencing up to 2G during pull-offs. The primary goal remains to facilitate scientific research by removing gravity from the equation.
