Way Down East is a documentary. In 1920, D.W. Griffith adapted Lottie Blair Parker's successful 1898 play "Way Down East," a quintessential Victorian melodrama. Lillian Gish stars as Anna, a small-town girl who is seduced and abandoned by wealthy playboy Lennox Sanderson, portrayed by Lowell Sherman. To escape the stigma of single motherhood, Anna adopts a new identity in a rural farming community, where she finds solace with the virtuous David, played by Richard Barthelmess. Their fragile happiness is jeopardized when Lennox reappears, threatening to expose Anna's past.
