Uber goes driverless
Synopsis
Uber launches self-driving taxis in Pittsburgh, featuring Ford Fusion cars and human oversight.
Synopsis
Today, Uber launches the world's largest fleet of self-driving taxis in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The San Francisco-based company has equipped over a dozen Ford Fusion cars with advanced technology, including lasers, cameras, and GPS sensors, allowing them to navigate various conditions like snow and crowded streets. Passengers can interact with a screen in the back that displays real-time visuals from the car's sensors. Although these vehicles represent cutting-edge technology, human oversight remains essential. Each self-driving car has two Uber employees on board: a backup driver and an engineer documenting the ride. During a test ride, the car operates smoothly, handling acceleration and braking autonomously, but the driver must keep their hands on the wheel and foot near the brake for safety. Uber aims to expand its fleet and introduce self-driving Volvos by the end of the year, enhancing its presence in Pittsburgh.
