Synopsis

Lionfish, a tropical reef species native to the Indo-Pacific, have become an invasive threat in the Caribbean and Atlantic. Originating from a small number of aquarium fish released into the ocean, these venomous predators are rapidly decimating native fish populations and coral reefs. Their aggressive breeding and lack of natural predators in these new environments exacerbate the issue. In the Florida Keys, various eradication programs are being implemented to combat this growing problem, although handling lionfish poses significant risks due to their painful venomous spines.
