Synopsis
Gillian Ayres studied at Camberwell School of Art from 1946 to 1950. After her studies, she ran the AIA Gallery with her husband, painter Henry Mundy. In the 1950s, Ayres engaged with prominent British abstract artists, including Roger Hilton. She responded to European tachism and American abstract expressionism, producing a significant body of work. In the 1960s, she was the only woman artist featured in the influential ‘Situation’ exhibitions, presenting large paintings that utilized radial drip and pour techniques.
