Synopsis
A clumsy animatronic hand moves through a backyard garden. Colorful smoke bombs fill the air. These motifs become characters in The Protagonists, a 2019 documentary by Dao. Over eight minutes, it questions the divide between Hollywood Cinema and what Dao calls 'Domestic Cinema.' The film examines representation and reality while addressing themes of filmic colonization.
