The Petrobas scandal explained
Synopsis
The Petrobras scandal reveals a $20 billion bribery scheme linked to Brazil's Workers Party.
Synopsis
In March last year, a former director of Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil company, is arrested for money laundering. During a plea bargain, he reveals a vast kickback and bribery scheme involving Petrobras executives and Brazil's largest construction firms. They allegedly inflate contracts by up to 3%, using the excess funds for bribes and to enrich themselves, primarily benefiting the ruling Workers Party and its allies. Analysts estimate that around twenty billion dollars has been stolen, nearly half of Petrobras's market value. The scandal complicates Petrobras's financial situation, as its auditors, PwC, have signed off on its financial statements, leaving the company cut off from capital markets and at risk of technical default. The Brazilian economy faces a potential recession, exacerbated by the scandal, which could lead to reduced investments and threaten vital infrastructure projects, including those related to the 2016 Olympics. Although President Dilma Rousseff, who chaired Petrobras from 2003 to 2010, denies involvement, the implications of the scandal are significant.
