Deep Dive: The Mole Agent (2020)

Film Lens

The Mole Agent
The Mole Agent follows a private investigator, Rómulo Aitken, who is hired by a client concerned about her mother, Sonia, allegedly being mistreated in a nursing home in El Monte, Chile. To uncover the truth, Rómulo hires an elderly man, Sergio Chamy, to pose as a new resident. The film captures Sergio's interactions with various residents, including Berta, who wishes to marry him, and Marta, who has dementia and steals from others. Through these interactions, the film reveals the emotional landscape of the nursing home and the complexities of elder care. After his investigation, Sergio concludes that Sonia is being treated well and emphasizes that the real issue lies with the families of the residents, who often neglect to visit. He notes that if Sonia's daughter cared more, she would already know her mother is in good hands. The film shows the loneliness experienced by the residents, which affects their mental and physical health.
