This society, composed of around 150,000 indigenous people, formed nearly fifty reductions, or Jesuit cities. The community flourished until it faced violent assaults from expeditions and mercenaries. These attacks led to significant population loss and provided justification for the expulsion of Jesuits by the kings of Portugal and Spain.
