Soldier's Widows

Synopsis

Melnyky, a small village in Ukraine's Cherkasy region, is home to numerous widows following the toll of war. Directed by Volodymyr Artemenko, whose father died at the front, "Soldier's Widows" focuses on the lives of these women, including Artemenko's nine aunts. Released in 1983, the film reflects the widespread impact of conflict on families in Ukraine. At the Berlin Film Festival, a critic referred to these widows as the Madonnas of the 20th century.
