Zigong city in Sichuan province, China, has a rich history of salt mining that dates back over 2,000 years. Generations of residents have passed down a myth warning of an impending disaster. According to this legend, excessive mining has hollowed out the underground, filling it with salty brine. When an earthquake strikes, the mine will unleash a flood of salty liquid, engulfing the city. Zheng’s film Sinking Latitude examines this myth and its implications for the community.
