Synopsis

On August 13, 1943, Doug Craig piloted the B-24 Liberator bomber 'Shady Lady' from Darwin, Australia, on a mission to bomb oil refineries in Balikpapan, Borneo. The crew encountered severe tropical storms, heavy anti-aircraft fire, and attacks from Japanese Zero fighters during the 16-hour and 35-minute flight. After crash-landing in a remote salt-pan in Northern Australia, local Aborigines provided crucial support, aiding in the extensive rescue efforts that allowed 'Shady Lady' to return to service.
