Saving Laptops From Landfills

Many computers are discarded each year, creating a significant challenge in getting them to those in need. The Free and Accessible Technology Initiative (FATI) addresses this issue by supporting financially disadvantaged communities and bridging the digital divide. In 2019, FATI received its first computer donation, starting with just two laptops. Over the past two years, they have helped over 300 families and worked on more than 400 computers and devices. The initiative highlights the importance of repurposing technology that others consider garbage, transforming it into valuable resources for families lacking access to devices. During midterm testing, the need for technology becomes evident, as some students require separate testing days due to a lack of available computers. The program continues to grow, with volunteers assessing and repairing donated devices to ensure they are functional and ready for use. The impact of this initiative is celebrated with music and applause, as communities come together to support one another in a world getting increasingly reliant on technology.
