Synopsis
On April 25, 1974, Salgueiro Maia walked into the GNR military barracks in Largo do Carmo. He entered unarmed and alone. Inside, he confronted Marcelo Caetano, the head of the Portuguese government. Maia had just led the Artillery 1 regiment from Santarém to seize control of Lisbon. His actions resulted in the peaceful overthrow of a dictatorship that lasted over 48 years. This moment marked the beginning of democracy in Portugal.
