Royal Mail faces mounting challenges
Synopsis
Royal Mail faces challenges a year after privatization under Moya Greene's leadership.
Synopsis
It is almost exactly a year since Royal Mail was privatized, a significant milestone credited to Moya Greene, the Canadian chief executive since 2010. Greene is the first woman and foreigner to lead Britain's postal service, which has a history spanning five centuries. Her role involves modernizing Royal Mail, which includes managing the express parcel service, Parcel Force, and the daily operations of postmen and women. Despite the privatization being a notable achievement, Royal Mail faces challenges such as a history of losses, regulatory constraints, and poor industrial relations. Automation is expected to enhance productivity, yet many tasks, particularly parcel handling at the Mount Pleasant distribution center, remain manual. The company must quickly improve automation to counteract the decline in letter revenues, which have been supported by price increases that may not be sustainable. Additionally, a three-year pay deal signed with unions in December adds pressure to maintain cost efficiency while investing in new facilities like the parcel hub in Chorley, near Manchester.
