Raise The Umbrellas

Synopsis

Hong Kong's streets were filled with protesters during the 2014 Umbrella Movement. Four years later, the movement received a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Raise the Umbrellas connects this protest to the global Occupy movement and the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. The film covers the movement’s environmental concerns, aspirations for independence, and the role of women activists known as “umbrella mothers.” It also includes perspectives from those opposed to the movement, illustrating the political risks faced by those advocating for democracy in Hong Kong.
