Synopsis
In May 2018, families from Portugal, Germany, France, Italy, Romania, Kenya, Fiji, and the Sáminuorra youth organization from Sweden filed a lawsuit against the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. They argue that the EU's 2030 climate target is insufficient to prevent dangerous climate change and fails to protect their fundamental rights to life, health, occupation, and property. Supported by over 175,000 citizens and various NGOs, the plaintiffs include three Portuguese families whose livelihoods in forestry, agriculture, and beekeeping are already threatened by climate impacts.
