Synopsis
Kavery Kaul presents a detailed account of calypso and soca music, rooted in the African-East Indian traditions of Trinidad and Tobago. The film traces the genre's evolution, particularly during the 1950s when Harry Belafonte brought calypso to a wider audience. It also addresses the rise of independent distribution networks in the 1980s that served the expatriate community, helping to maintain and expand the music's reach. A digital restoration premiered at the MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation in January 2023.
