John R. Brinkley, a doctor from Milford, Kansas, gained notoriety in the early 20th century for his controversial method of treating male impotence by implanting goat testicles into patients. His practice, which began around 1917, led to immense wealth and fame, as well as a run for governor of Kansas in 1930. Brinkley also built KFKB, one of the most powerful radio stations of its time, and is credited with creating the infomercial.
